  Stress Facts and Background

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) state that for 2004/5 around 12.8 million working days were lost to stress, depression and anxiety related absenteeisms. The HSE also highlights that each case of stress-related ill health leads to an average of 30.9 working days lost. The cost of stress is significant to both employee, employer and society in general, not to mention the often devastating impact it can have on the family.

No pressure and lack of stimulation can mean we become bored (rust-out). Many of us prefer to work in our “comfort zone” with set routines and environments that are familiar to us.

Some pressure, at times, which “stretches” us and can spur us on to perform and meet deadlines, can be good. Our abilities to cope, however,  depend on our coping mechanisms and these can vary enormously from day to day and even hour to hour. Relationships, families, conflicts, our journey to work and the general wear and tear that modern day living brings, all add to the demands made upon on us and can lead to “burn out”.  Left unchecked , or not recognised, and allowed to accumulate, stress can manifest itself physically, emotionally and psychologically and can potentially have a devastating impact on our lives and those around us.
